Heera Moong Chilka is split green gram (moong dal) with the green skin naturally retained. Also known as Moong Dal Chilka or Split Green Gram, it is a popular ingredient in Indian cuisine, especially for dals, curries, khichdi and traditional vegetarian dishes.

The dal has a mild, earthy flavour and cooks into a creamy yet slightly textured consistency, making it perfect for everyday Indian meals.

Cooking Instructions

  1. Wash the dal: Rinse the Moong Chilka thoroughly under cold water until the water runs mostly clear.

  2. Optional soaking: Soak for 20–30 minutes for quicker cooking.

  3. Cook the dal: Add the washed dal and approximately 3 cups of water to a saucepan or pressure cooker.

  4. Add turmeric and a little salt.

  5. Pressure cooker: Cook for approximately 2–3 whistles, then allow the pressure to release naturally.

  6. Stovetop: Simmer covered for approximately 25–35 minutes, or until the dal is tender.

  7. Prepare the tadka: Heat oil or ghee in a small pan. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. When they splutter, add garlic, green chilli and onion.

  8. Add chopped tomato and cook until soft.

  9. Pour the tadka over the cooked dal and mix well.

  10. Garnish with fresh coriander and serve hot.
